Curriculum Vitae
Martin received his MSc from the Technical University of Munich, where he focused on structural and electronic transport properties of semiconductor nanostructures. During his PhD at the FOM Institute AMOLF in Amsterdam, Martin studied the optical properties of sub-wavelength metallic nanostructures as optical antennas for spontaneous emission control. He joined the Photonics Lab in 2013 as a Postdoc, was elevated to Private Lecturer and Senior Scientist in 2018 and awarded the title of Professor in 2024.
Martin’s interest is in precision measurements of nanoscopic mechanical motion using optical fields. His research focuses on the measurement of both linear and rotational mechanical motion at the limits imposed by the laws of quantum mechanics. Martin considers it important to interface the research community with the general public and he has represented the Department ITET and ETH Zurich at numerous outreach talks. He teaches Nanooptics and Quantum Measurements and Optomechanics , and is engaged in the QuanTech workshops. In addition, he serves in the program MSc in Quantum Engineering as the program manager, a tutor, as well as a member of the steering and the admission committee.
